More about Mjóifjörður
Mjóifjörður is an 18 km long fjord, and its name translates as Narrow Fjord.
When arriving to the bottom of the fjord you´ll keep driving along the northern coast till you get to a small village, Brekkuþorp. If you drive about 16 km further out of the fjord you come to Dalatangi. The road to Mjóifjörður is breathtaking, but it’s just open for about five months of the year (depending on the weather). The rest of the year, Mjóifjörður is only accessible by scheduled boat from Norðfjörður.
Today, no school-aged children are living in Mjóifjörður, and therefore there is no local school.
In 2023, about 10 persons live in Brekkuþorp and 3 persons in Dalatangi, year-round. The people in Brekkuþorp make their livings from fishing, sheep farming and tourism. In Dalatangi the people make their living from weather observations and lighthouse keeping, sheep farming and raising and taming sheepdogs.

Klifbrekkufossar
are magnificent waterfalls in the bottom of Mjóifjörður. While entering the last steep slope down the heath the waterfalls can be spotted on the right.

Prestagil
(the Priest’s Ravine) takes its name from a local folktale that tells of a huge troll woman who seduced priests into the ravine and ate them. Located near to Klifbrekkufossar.

Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) – Made in USA
This is the wreck of a landing craft that has been aground at the bottom of Mjóifjörður since 1966.

Brekkuþorp
where you can walk around the small village and experience old times and modern times in the same place.

Heljarfoss
is a beautiful waterfall only few minutes’ drives from Brekkuþorp towards Dalatangi.

Smjörvogur
hammer-locked scales about halfway towards Dalatangi. Difficult to reach except by sea and once used as a prison because it was impossible to escape without help.

Dalatangi
is about 16 km away from Brekkuþorp. There you can find two lighthouses. The older one was built in 1895 and the newer one is from 1908. People live there all year round. At Dalatangi there is an incredible view to all eight that is truly worth the trip.

Church
The church in Brekkuþorp is a small and beautiful country church. It was built in 1892. We recommend having a look at it.
