Escape the Crowds: Discover Mjóifjörður and Solbrekka Holiday Homes

Mjóifjörður's Blog

Mjóifjörður has abundant berry fields, but it is probably best known for its remarkable tranquillity and beautiful waterfalls which attracts visitors all year round. Solbrekka Holiday Homes, a tourism service in Mjoifjordur, offers three types of accommodation; two cottages, guesthouse and campsite.

The cottages

Escape to the peaceful beauty of Mjoifjordur and enjoy a relaxing stay at the cottages of Solbrekka Holiday Homes. Nestled between towering mountains and the calm waters in the peaceful surroundings of the fjord, the two cosy cottages offer a unique opportunity to experience East Iceland far from the crowds. They have welcomed guests since 2004 and are now open all year round.

Each cottage accommodates up to four guests and features a private veranda with stunning panoramic views over the sea and surrounding mountains, the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee, watch the changing light across the fjord, or simply unwind in complete peace and quiet. Both offer a comfortable stay surrounded by spectacular nature. Whether you visit during the bright summer nights or the snowy winter season, the scenery around Mjóifjörður is unforgettable.

From 2025 the cottages are open for bookings all year round and provide a warm and comfortable base for exploring the untouched nature of the Eastfjords. During the winter months, guests can relax and enjoy the warmth and comfort in the Örbrekka bath house, where the hot tub facilities are located indoors, an ideal place to warm up after a day of sightseeing or hiking. In summer, private hot tubs on the veranda allow you to soak while enjoying fresh mountain air and spectacular fjord views.

Mjóifjörður is one of Iceland’s hidden gems, known for its tranquillity, dramatic landscapes and peaceful atmosphere, including the Klifbrekkufossar waterfalls. With only a handful of year-round residents, this idyllic fjord offers visitors a rare chance to slow down, reconnect with nature and experience the quiet side of Iceland.

The guesthouse

The guesthouse has recently undergone extensive renovations and now features four spacious rooms: two triple rooms and two family rooms with bunk beds accommodating up to four people in each room. The improvements have transformed the appearance and comfort of the guesthouse, with larger rooms, opening windows and emergency exits adding both convenience and safety. The kitchen area has also been redesigned with a new layout, offering better facilities and more dining space for guests. Bathroom facilities are no longer separated by gender, and the shower and toilet areas are now private enclosed units to ensure greater comfort and privacy.

The campsite

The campsite has been welcoming travellers since the late 1980s and remains a peaceful place to stay surrounded by the quiet beauty of Mjóifjordur. It is situated on the spacious lawn in front of and beside Solbrekka Guesthouse and Cafe, offering a peaceful and convenient spot for your stay.

The team behind the scenes

During the busy summer season, a team of three to four staff members helps maintain the cottages, guesthouse and campsite. Cleaning of the cottages begins around 11am or as soon as guests check out. Some visitors leave early, while others enjoy the tranquillity of the fjord until the very last minute. Cottage cleaning is prioritised before the guesthouse rooms are prepared.

Laundry is largely managed by Johanna, Margaret’s mother and the original founder, with help from family members and staff during peak periods. Washing often begins around 11am and can continue until late afternoon during the busiest weeks of summer. Whenever the weather allows, laundry is dried outdoors in the fresh Icelandic air, leaving the linen extra fresh and inviting.
