At Mjóifjörður Tourism, our mission, vision, and daily work are rooted in one simple belief: this place matters. Located in one of the most remote fjords of East Iceland, Mjóifjörður is not a destination for rush or crowds, it is a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience Iceland in its most honest form. Our role is to welcome people here with care, while protecting the land and honouring the stories that shaped it.
Our mission is to offer warm, personal hospitality in harmony with nature. We aim to create a calm and genuine experience where guests can disconnect from everyday noise and reconnect with themselves and the environment. Whether visitors come for a night or a longer stay, we want them to leave feeling rested, grounded, and enriched by the quiet power of the fjord.
Our vision looks to the future of Mjóifjörður as a place of tranquility and authenticity. We believe tourism here should remain small-scale, respectful, and sustainable. Nature always comes first, and every decision we make is guided by the question: does this protect the fjord and enhance the experience without changing its soul? We want future generations, both locals and visitors, to experience Mjoifjordur as it is today: wild, peaceful, and deeply moving.
Our commitment is twofold: to the land and to the people who visit it. The mountains, ocean, wildlife, and silence are fragile, and we take our responsibility seriously. At the same time, we believe hospitality should feel human and personal. Hosting others is not just a service, it’s a relationship built on trust, care, and respect.
We offer several ways to stay in Mjoifjordur, each connected to the landscape and the history of the fjord. Guests can choose between two comfortable cottages, each with a sleeping loft, perfect for cozy evenings after a day outdoors. Our renovated guesthouse tells a deeper story, it once housed fishermen during the golden herring years, when life in the fjord revolved around the sea, until the herring stock collapsed in the late 1960s. Today, it offers simple comfort and a sense of continuity with the past. For those traveling closer to nature, our campsite sits with open views over the ocean and provides access to showers, proof that simplicity and comfort can coexist.
Our café is a natural gathering place, welcoming both guests and passersby. We serve local refreshments and proudly introduce our own small-scale production innovations: an orange rhubarb jam and our very best blends of four flavours of locally sourced berries crafted into delicious liquors, unique tastes inspired by the land itself.
Life in Mjóifjörður changes with the seasons. From early June, depending on access over the heath, through September, and sometimes, when the weather is mild, into October, the campsite, guesthouse, and café are open, buzzing gently with summer life. In winter, when the road closes, the fjord becomes accessible only by ferryboat, returning Mjóifjörður to deep quiet and isolation.
This rhythm, shaped by nature, is at the heart of everything we do. We invite you to experience it with us.
